Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
A standout athlete at Bucyrus High School, Shawn Winkelfoos also became a standout at middle linebacker and four-year letter winner for the Heidelberg football team. In just his first season, Winkelfoos earned the Paul Hoernemann Award.
In 1990 and 1991, Winkelfoos was named Ohio Athletic Conference First Team and was the leading tackler for the Student Princes. Before he stepped out on to the field for his final season on the line, Winkelfoos also received Pre-Season All-American recognition and was named team captain.
The 1991 media guide described the 6-1, 239 pound senior as "an excellent hitter who can get to the ball and shed blockers ... a tough pass defender with size and quickness." Winkelfoos did not disappoint that season and earned a Most Valuable Player nod from the team and All-American Honorable Mention status.
Winkelfoos graduated with a degree in elementary education from Heidelberg and went on to earn his master's degree in administration from Ashland University. He stood at the front of the classroom from 1993-2001 and went on to serve as the Dean of Students at Bucyrus Middle School from 2001-2002 before moving into an assistant principal role. Currently Winkelfoos is the school principal for Highland West Elementary.
He married Michele (Sims), a 1991 'Berg grad, and they have had six children together. In his free time, Winkelfoos works on the family's horse farm in Mount Gilead and helps raise over 100 animals with his children for their numerous 4-H projects, as well as helping to coach their various youth athletic teams. He has also worked as a Downs Syndrome Advocate.
