On the track and on the hardwood, Greg Tyson remains one of the most highly decorated student-athletes in Heidelberg history.  A two-sport standout, Tyson helped pave the way for others to follow.

Tyson had busy winters throughout his tenure at Heidelberg, juggling his on-court duties as a starting wing for Duane Sheldon’s basketball team while still practicing and competing for Kevin Lucas’s track & field team.  In the 2005-06 season, Tyson started all 25 basketball games and earned All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors and won the first of his two national titles in the indoor long jump.

At track nationals in 2006, hosted by St. Olaf College, Tyson outleapt his competition by a whopping 9.75 inches to claim the top spot on the podium.  The winning jump of 24’ 8.5”, which came on his final attempt, remains as the top mark in Heidelberg history.

The 2006-07 season saw much the same.  Tyson was a key starter for the rapidly improving hoops team and won the national indoor long jump crown.  Instead of a comfortable victory at NCAAs, Tyson came through in the clutch -- securing the championship on his final leap and winning by 3.25”.

In addition to his two titles, Tyson was an eight-time NCAA All-American and a 12-time national qualifier.  He was a 12-time OAC champion and was twice named conference field athlete of the year.  On the court, he amassed 971 points, 389 rebounds and 207 assists -- totals which currently sit 29th, 36th and 15th in school history, respectively.

Tyson currently resides in his hometown of Lima, and works in operations at Cenovus Refinery.
