Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
Heidelberg University has seen 32 players score 1,000 points in their careers while donning the black and orange. Lucas Messer sits alone at the top of that list with 1,760 career points.
A ‘05 graduate of Heidelberg, Lucas dominated the hardwood in Seiberling Gymnasium for two coaches -- John Hill and Duane Sheldon -- in the early 2000s. He was a three-time All-OAC and a two-time NABC and d3hoops.com All-Region selection. Lucas electrified the record book for the Student Princes. He still holds two singlegame, two single-season, and three career records for the Tricolor, including most total points, points per game, and free throws made and attempted.
During his time at the Berg, Lucas majored in education with a focus in adolescent-young adult integrated Social Studies. In the classroom, he was a dean’s list honoree numerous times and was an honored student-teacher as he completed his education program.
Since his graduation, Lucas has risen swiftly through the education ranks. He taught and coached in the Clyde School District for 10 years before transitioning to his current role as the assistant principal at Port Clinton Middle School, a position he has held for five years.
Lucas married his wife, Rachel, and returned to his hometown of Clyde. The couple are the parents of one son, Cedric, who is now 12 years old. Rachel and Lucas enjoy their busy life of attending their son’s sporting events and spending time with close friends and family.
