Dr. Abbott is the embodiment of the Heidelberg spirit. A team physician and chief of health services at Heidelberg for 24 years from 1954 until his death in 1978, Dr. Abbott was an ever-present ally for Heidelberg both on and off the field.

Relentless in his dedication to duty, Dr. Abbott routinely left the campus late at night following a road trip for that one last hospital check of a fallen player.

It was through Dr. Abbott's efforts that the Stoner Student Health Center was developed at Heidelberg.

Mercy Hospital in Tiffin established an intensive cardiac care unit through his able guidance and inspiration.

A Tiffin native, Dr. Abbott attended Heidelberg for a year before transferring to Adelbert College of Western Reserve University where he was graduated in 1938 with a degree in medicine.

He earned his master's degree from Northwestern University's School of Medicine in 1943. He served his residency at Harper Hospital in Detroit. A veteran of World War II, Dr. Abbott served as president of the medical staff at Mercy and in various capacities for the Northwestern Ohio Medical Association.

A past president of Seneca County Medical Society, he was the first recipient of the Heidelberg College Alumni Citation.
