Major General Darrel R. Porr, M.D. graduated from Heidelberg in 1969 with a degree in biology. He earned three letters in football and baseball and two in wrestling.

In his senior campaign, Porr served as a co-captain in both football and wrestling. He received the Hoernemann Award, which is made annually to the graduating student who most nearly exemplifies the characteristics of mind, body, and spirit to which Paul Hoernemann '38 dedicated his own life. He also earned the Prugh Prize, which recognizes the person who excels all others in leadership and performance in several branches of intercollegiate athletics.

Porr enlisted in the Army as an Infantry soldier in August 1969. He spent five years as an Infantry Officer before attending medical school at the University of Cincinnati. Porr completed his residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center where he was simultaneously attached to the 2/75th Infantry.

Porr served in combat as an Infantry Special Forces Officer in Vietnam and on the Laotian / Thailand Border. He was a military physician during the hostilities in Operation URGENT FURY in Grenada and was part of classified operations in Lebanon and El Salvador. In Operation JUST CAUSE in Panama, DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait he was part of the parachute assault and subsequent operations. He served as Deployment Commander in Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Kuwait in Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Along with serving in combat, Porr was also the Director of a large Family Practice Clinic, the Director for a 44-Physican Family Practice Residency Training Program and the Chief of Department of Primary Care and Community Medicine at Fort Bragg.

Porr was most recently the Deputy Director for Logistics, Medical Readiness, Joint Staff with the United States Army. He retired in January 2006 and currently serves as the Medical Director and Senior Medical Consultant for Sol Diversified Inc. and TerraHealth International in San Antonio, Texas. Porr and his wife, Susan, have three daughters and one son.
