A 1969 graduate of Heidelberg College, Mike Fischer came to Heidelberg following an outstanding high school career at Elyria High School.

During his career in a Heidelberg uniform, Fischer scored 1,006 points. His senior year he averaged 15.7 points per game during the 1968-69 season.

His junior season found him with a 17.5 scoring average while he dropped in 13.4 a game as a sophomore.

Fischer was honored three straight years as the Most Valuable Player for the Student Princes.

Blessed with quickness and speed, Fischer came to Heidelberg with all the credentials needed to excel on the college level. And excel he did.

While in high school he established himself as a deadly shooter from the foul line where he once made 32 consecutive foul shots over the course of eight games for the highest number of anyone player at Elyria in the time span of 1953- 1965.

During that time span he also dropped 84 of 103 for 80.9 percent.

In addition, Fischer was regarded as an outstanding defensive performer which drew praise from his high school coach at Elyria, Dale Reichenbach.

"Mike was a fine offensive player and a good defensive man. He had the knack for helping others on defense, and he was tough on our press," Reichenbach said.

Fischer was a unanimous choice on the All-Buckeye Conference team his senior year when he averaged 17.3 points a game and never was under 10 points in any single game, despite heavy pressure from the opposition.

When he left Elyria he was 10th among all-time scorers during a time that the game was without the three-point line.

In addition, his senior year found him honored on the All-Lorain County first team.

Following a relatively quiet freshman season, Fischer picked up the tempo for the Student Princes during the 1966-67 season when he finished with 274 points for a J3 point average to rank 26th in the conference.

That season he also ranked 17th in foul shooting with 76.4 percent.

From that point on, Fischer established himself as one of the top players to ever play the game at Heidelberg College. And nearly 30 years since his graduation, he still ranks 18th on the all-time scoring list.

Not bad for a 5-9 eager in a game of giants.
