Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
A combination of hard work and dedication paved the way for Bill "Duf" Dufur on the court for the Heidelberg men's basketball team. Bill was a four-year letter winner and a two-time captain for the Berg from 1985-1990.
Over the course of his career, Bill helped guide the Berg to a winning record every year and finished his career at 68-39. More impressive was the impact Heidelberg made in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. In his first year, Heidelberg stood at .500 and was tied for fourth. By his senior year, Heidelberg finished at 14-4 and was runner-up.
Bill concluded his collegiate career as the OAC's Mike Gregory Award winner, which recognizes the league's most valuable player. He was also named to the Don Hansen's Basketball Gazette All-American Third Team. Bill is the lone Heidelberg men's player to earn the conference's top honor, as well as earn All-American recognition. His top honor in the league, as well as in the nation, went along with his nod on the National Basketball Coaches Association's Great Lakes Region First Team and the OAC First Team. As a junior, Bill garnered a spot on the OAC Second Team.
At the completion of his career, Bill amassed 1,293 career points, which currently ranks ninth all-time at the Berg. During the 1989-90 season, he sank a school record 40 consecutive free throws. As a freshman, Bill helped to guide the team to the single-season record for blocked shots (160), and as a senior, the team set single-season marks for free throws made (530) and free throws attempted (706).
Bill originally hails from Chardon, Ohio, and attended Berkshire High School. He graduated in 1990 from Heidelberg with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. He is married to the former Mindy Gorsuch, a 1990 graduate. The couple has been married for 18 years and currently reside in Mount Vernon, Ohio, with their three daughters, Morgan (16), Katelyn (12 ½) and Jessica (10).
