Heidelberg Athletics Hall of Fame
Chris (Bowden) Harris joins the Hall of Fame as one of the pioneers of women’s athletics at Heidelberg.
She was the first woman to ever win the Hoernemann Award in 1976. She held the single-game rebound record after collecting 24 rebounds against Findlay in 1976. She was a strong scorer and constant presence on the backboard averaging nearly a double-double during her career. She was a four-year letter-winner on the basketball team and served as captain.
She has used the same pioneering spirit that made her a leader on the courts at Heidelberg to get through her daily life. She has suffered from Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS) for the past 21 years, but remains active in her community and the life of Heidelberg College.
Harris, a long-time resident of Kettering, is an active member of Fairhaven Church.
Following graduation she spent one year as an elementary and high school music teacher in the Tiffin City School District, while also doubling as the girls’ basketball coach. She would spend the next three years as the middle school music teacher at RHAM Public Schools in Hebron, Conn.
She is the proud mother of Elizabeth Lyn Harris, who recently graduated from Nyack College with a degree in elementary education.
