Barnes wins Fall Invitational, Team sets record

FOSTORIA -- A strong Saturday performance propelled the Heidelberg University Women's Golf team to a fourth-place finish at their fall invitational. A day after setting the school record, sophomore Brooke Barnes took home medalist honors by a comfortable three-stroke margin. 

As a team, HU shattered the program record by 13 strokes, shooting a 313.  For the weekend, they went 328-313--641.

Barnes started Saturday with a birdie on four, setting the tone. Though it was her only birdie of the day, Barnes was sharp. She finished the tournament with a 73-77--150, besting Mount Union's Emma Packard (76-77--153) and Hope's Zuidema (78-75--153).  

Barnes is believed to be the first two-day medalist in program history. 

Lydia Dietz took 11 shots off her Friday total, placing 18th with an 86-75--161. Not to be outdone, Danielle Powell trimmed 13 strokes off from round one, carding an 89-76--165. The 76 was a career best for Powell.

Saturday's fourth score for Heidelberg was Lexie Honigford's 85. She shot an 81-85--166. Elizabeth Jackson had a 94-87--181.  

The B team took three shots off their Friday performance. Mia Hall improved by 26 strokes, while Paige Kearns, Cate Reinhart and Hall set personal bests. 

Calvin took the team title, shooting a 318-311--629. 

FROM FRIDAY: Sophomore Brooke Barnes set a school record in the first round of the Heidelberg Fall Invitational, carding a +1 73. As a team, the Heidelberg University Women's Golf team shot a 329 and sits fifth.

Barnes was one-under through nine holes but bogeyed 13 and 14 to move to +1. After a birdie on 15, the Nordonia graduate bogeyed 16 and 17. Needing a par to tie the record, Barnes drained a 10-foot putt to break it. She holds the one-day lead.  

Teammate Lydia Dietz held the record of +2 74, set at the Heidelberg Fall Invitational in 2023.  

Lexie Honigford had a career day, shooting a collegiate-best 81.  Dietz had an 86 and Danielle Powell rounded out the scoring with an 89.  Elizabeth Jackson was the fifth, carding a 94.  

The B team was led by Adisyn Kramer's career best 88. Paige Kearns had a 97 and Anzaya Estep shot a 98.  Cate Reinhart had a 100 and Sophie Day carded a 106. Competing as individuals, Cheyenne Deaton had a 104 and Mia Hall had a 137. 

Mount Union and Hope are tied atop the leaderboard with a 317. 

Play resumes at Fostoria Country Club with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
