• MLAX registers first OAC win in program history
• Wernerspach and Selfridge combine for nine goals
• Berg forces 29 turnovers, causes 15

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- In a 14-4 win over Muskingum University, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team won its first conference game in program history. The win comes one day after the women's team picked up their first-ever OAC win, also coming against the Muskies.

Senior captain Matt Wernerspach led the attack, scoring five goals and contributing an assist. He now has 29 goals, tied for first in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Nick Selfridge netted four goals and tallied an assist as Patrick McCarthy had two goals and two assists.

With the win, Heidelberg improves to 6-3, 1-1 in the OAC. Muskingum slips to 3-5, 0-2 in conference play.

Less than two minutes, in Wernerspach got the visitors on the board with his first goal of the afternoon, assisted by McCarthy. Midway through the first, the senior tallied another goal for a 2-0 lead.

Noah Messerall's second goal of the season pushed the lead to 3-0 before the Muskies score their lone goal of the half.

Heidelberg scored six times throughout the second period, with two of the goals coming off the hands of Wernerspach. Two goals from Selfridge and one apiece from McCarthy and Brock Hodson padded the HU lead to 9-1 at the half.

Early in the third, Hunter Edwards slotted a beautiful pass to Hodson, who finished with a goal to add to the Student Prince advantage. Wernerspach scored his fifth of the day just moments later for an 11-1 cushion.

Heidelberg surrendered three Muskingum goals late in the game, but the Berg would stifle the momentum and seal the victory.

Defensively, Chris Storrs caused four turnovers as Jacob White caused three. The pair combined for 14 ground balls.

The Student Princes were 15 for 2 2 from the face off X. Messerall (4 for 5) and Ty Garrett (5 for 6) had the best showings for the visitors.

Freshman goalie Alex Bruder had another impressive outing, making eight saves.

Heidelberg was a perfect 18 of 18 in clear attempts.

"I'm proud of the effort and growth we have shown," said head coach Bill Schmoldt. "A focus on playing hard and physical helps us as we continue to learn how to win."

The Berg hits the road again on Wednesday, traveling to Baldwin Wallace University. First face off with the Yellow Jackets is slated for 7 p.m.
