Spalding outlasts Berg lacrosse

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- Jumping back into non-conference action, the Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team was tripped up on the road. Spalding University outlasted the Student Princes, 19-17.
Rayce Septer had a seven-point performance, picking up four goals and three assists.  Kaivin Jones scored four and Malachai Davis added three.

Heidelberg jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals by Colin Parker, Dusty Bernard and Rayce Septer in the first nine minutes of the game. Spalding answered with two quick goals. Septer scored before the end of the period, and HU took a 4-3 lead into the second quarter.

Kaivan Jones scored the first two goals of the second quarter, but Spalding responded with a string of goal goals in a row over a four minute stretch.  Malachai Davis ended that run with a goal, but the hosts scored twice, quickly, and led, 11-7.  Mario Manzardo and Bernard notched goals late in the half, but the Student Princes trailed at half, 12-9.

In the third, Heidelberg outscored Spalding, 4-3. A Septer goal sandwiched between two from Davis helped the Student Princes inch back to within one.

Spalding did just enough in the fourth to keep HU at bay. Both times Heidelberg got within a goal, the hosts found the next tally to regain momentum.

Heidelberg caused 12 turnovers, with Jonathan Marty, MJ Yarosh, Septer, and Dante Coffman all tallying two.

The Berg returns to action on Saturday at Wilmington.  Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
