Baseball falls in finale

Box Score

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team wrapped up the 2017 season with a late-inning loss to No. 13 La Roche College, 10-5. The Student Princes finished with a 22-17 record and narrowly missed out on a berth to the OAC Tournament. The Redhawks scored seven runs in the final three innings to secure the win.

Matt Psychas, Evan Long and Cory Jacobs each had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

David Lemley put the Redhawks on the board with a two-run homer to left center in the first.

Undaunted, the Student Princes answered immediately. After Joey Rydzewski was hit in the helmet with the first offering from Ethan Lewis, Matt Psychas sent a double down the left field line. Evan Long followed with a basehit to left center to plate Rydzewski. Cory Jacobs pushed a opposite field single past a diving first baseman to tie the game. Adam Hershberger sent a bouncer to third, but Ian Velez's throw to second sailed into right center, allowing Long to score. With runners on the corners, HU tacked on another run on a 4-6-3 double play.

After La Roche (31-8) scored one in the fourth, Heidelberg responded in the fifth. Rydzewski led off with a single inside the left field line and scored on a double to the power alley in right by Psychas.

Despite a rocky first inning, starter Alex Simun was in control. He went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. The final pitch of his collegiate career was a called third strike. He was aided by two diving catches in right by Alex Manner.

The Redhawks would tie the game in the seventh with two runs off of reliever Conner Pacella.

In the eighth, La Roche plated five off of relievers Alex Sir Louis (0-3) and Cameron Deemer, taking a 10-5 lead. The biggest blow was Luis Navedo's three-run double to left center which ticked off the glove of a diving Darrin Shirk.

Heidelberg had opportunities late, but stranded two runners in each of the final three innings.

The game marked the final contest for Simun, Jacobs, Hershberger and Manner. The Student Princes finished with a 10-4 record at Peaceful Valley.
