Baseball celebrates Senior Day

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team was swept by visiting Otterbein University on Saturday. The Cardinals took the opener, 6-3, then rallied for a 3-2 win in the second game.

Prior to the game, Heidelberg honored seven seniors -- Bready Limke, Garrett LaBeau, Logan Winstead, Logan Franz, Brayden Tucker, Tyler Fields, and Max Coffman.

GAME ONE: OTT 6-13-2  BERG 3-7-2

The Cardinals put up three in the top of the first to take control of the opener.

Down 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Heidelberg loaded the bases with no outs. Unfortunately, they would only plate one, with Sam Schneider scoring on a double play.

In the eight, HU trailed 6-1. As they did in the sixth, The Berg loaded the bases with no outs. This time, however, they plated two. One scored on a fielder's choice to short, and the other scored on a sacrifice fly.  The Cardinals led, 6-3, and held on for the victory

GAME TWO:  OTT 3-10-0  BERG 2-7-1

Heidelberg played from in front in the nightcap. Limke started with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Schneider. Grant Bomer followed with an RBI single to left to drive in Limke with the game's first run. Bomer scored on a single to right center by Logan Walpole.

Otterbein scored once in the sixth, closing the deficit to one.

In the eighth, the Cardinals got the leadoff batter aboard and tried to sacrifice him into scoring position. Instead, the throw to first sailed down the right field line, allowing Otterbein to tie the game. The next batter singled, giving the visitors their first lead of the game.

Heidelberg got the tying run to third in the bottom of the ninth, but could not equalize.

UP NEXT:

Heidelberg turns around to host Bluffton on Sunday. At noon, the teams will resume the game halted by rain on April 1. Following the completion of that contest, the teams will play another nine-inning contest.
