Box Score TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team got the timely hits it had been craving, pulling off a non-conference sweep of visiting Bluffton University. In a game that began in March but was halted by rain, HU won the opener, 11-6, in 10 innings. The Student Princes took the second game, 4-3.

GAME ONE: BERG 11-12-2   BLUFF 6-11-4

In March, Heidelberg struck first in the opening inning, as Sam Schneider crossed home plate on a double steal to give the Student Princes an early 1-0 lead. Berg's defense stayed sharp, holding Bluffton scoreless through the first two innings.

In the top of the third, HU's offense came alive. Simeon Betts launched a home run to extend the lead, and later in the inning, Thomas McGuire delivered an RBI double to left field that brought in Grant Bomer. The Beavers responded in the bottom half of the inning, getting on the board to cut into Heidelberg's lead.

Before bad weather halted play in the sixth, Heidelberg added a run in the fifth on an RBI single by McGuire that scored Schneider. Bluffton responded with two runs in the bottom half to make it 4-3. In the sixth inning, Logan Walpole reached on an error and moved to second, and another Bluffton miscue allowed Brayden Tucker to score, extending Berg's lead before the delay.

When play resumed in April at Peaceful Valley, the Beavers tied the game with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth.

In the top of the 10th, Heidelberg crossed the plate five times. It started with a single to right center by Logan Winstead and a bunt single by Connor Roberts. With one out, Tucker slashed a single through the right side to plate the go-ahead run. Schneider dropped a double onto the left field line to plate two more. Next, Bomer doubled to left, just in front of the left fielder, scoring another run. Limke capped the scoring with a single to right that drove in another.

Cody Caplinger picked up the win in relief. He worked the ninth and 10th.

GAME TWO:  BERG 4-7-0   BLUFF 3-6-0

In a low-scoring affair, the Student Princes downed the Beavers despite a late-inning scare, 4-3

In the bottom of the third, Heidelberg got on the board off a wild pitch that brought home Owen Hood, making it 1-0.

Two innings later, Hood came home again off a Braedy Limke ground out.

The Beavers got on the board in the top of the sixth. Then, on the top of the eighth, the Beavers scored another two runs to take the lead.

But the Student Princes came back in the bottom of the eighth, putting up two runs off a Logan Walpole single up the middle to bring home Cohen Sendelbach and Limke.  HU led, 4-3.

The Beavers were retired in order in the ninth, capping off the sweep for the Student Princes and the final home game of the year.
