Box Score 2 UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Control problems plagued the Heidelberg University baseball team on Friday, leading to a sweep by host John Carroll University. JCU pushed away late in a 5-2 win in the opener, and had full command in the 19-5 nightcap.
In total, Heidelberg pitchers issued 17 walks on the afternoon.
Down 2-0 in the opener, Heidelberg (15-14, 5-7 OAC) scored twice in the fourth. Evan Long tripled into the cavernous outfield at Schweickert Field. He scored on an infield hit by Cory Jacobs. Jacobs went first-to-third on a single by Parker Fronk and raced home on a sacrifice fly by Adam Hershberger.
The score remained tied until the sixth. JCU pushed across a run with a bases-loaded walk off of reliever Conner Pacella. In the eighth, a two-out single brought in two insurance runs for the Blue Streaks.
In the ninth, Hershberger led off with a double to center, but was not able to advance.
The nightcap started with the Blue Streaks taking a 10-1 lead through three innings. Zach Cleaver drove in the HU run during the early onslaught, driving in Fronk.
The top of the fifth featured three run-scoring singles with two outs. Long drove in Alex Manner, Fronk drove in Long and Hershberger drove in Jacobs. Manner drove in another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left.
JCU (13-16, 6-6 OAC) would score seven in the sixth and one in the eighth.
The Student Princes won't have much time to lament the Friday sweep, as they host Ohio Northern (15-16, 4-8 OAC) on Saturday at Peaceful Valley. The twinbill starts at 1 p.m.
