Box Score TIFFIN -- A first-half deficit of five goals proved too difficult for the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team to overcome in a 13-7 loss to Muskingum University on Saturday. Patrick McCarthy had two goals and an assist to lead the Student Princes, who fell to 2-7, 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Trailing 5-0 in the second, Heidelberg got on the board when Owen Carter tucked a shot in behind Muskingum netminder Phillip Dappen. Carter's sixth of the season was all HU would muster in the half. The Muskies tacked on three more in the quarter, with the third coming as the horn sounded.
The Muskies (4-4, 1-1) would work the lead up to 10-1 before McCarthy scored his first of the game at the 6:08 mark of the third.
Starting with a Matt Wernerspach goal with 1:44 left in the third, Heidelberg rattled off four straight to get the score down to 11-6. Eli Haire and McCarthy scored goals 30 seconds apart as part of the run, which was capped with a man-up goal by Wernerspach, off a feed from McCarthy.
Nick Selfridge capped the HU scoring with his 20th goal of the season.
Defensively, Tyler Hammack made 12 saves. Ryan Sinnema had five caused turnovers and Chris Storrs had three caused turnovers in a physical game between conference schools.
For the Muskies, Dappen -- who was extremely sharp early as the Muskies built their lead -- finished with 15 saves. In his return to the lineup, Ian McGougan had a game-high five goals.
The Student Princes are still searching for their first home win and first conference win. An opportunity to do both presents itself on Wednesday evening, as Baldwin Wallace University visits Hoernemann Stadium. It is a tall order for the Tricolor, with BW coming in 7-1, 2-0.
Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m.
