Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. -- The cold temperatures did not cool off the bats of the Heidelberg University baseball team. The Student Princes recorded 24 hits in a 20-14 win over Earlham College on Thursday. HU fell behind early, but used a 12-run fifth to take the lead for good.
The Berg improves to 7-4 overall while the Quakers slip to 1-4.
Joey Rydzewski, Adam Hershberger, and Evan Long all had four hits on the afternoon. The trio combined for 14 RBI. The big blow came on a grand slam by Long in the fifth inning -- HU's first long ball of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
HU wasted no time, scoring twice in the first inning. Rydzewski roped a double just inside the right field line to lead off the inning. Matt Psychas followed with a double to left to score Rydzewski. Two batters later, Hershberger line a single to center to plate Psychas for a 2-0 lead.
The Quakers scored off a fielder's choice in the bottom of the second off HU starter Brady Ansara.
Earlham put up a five-spot in the third. A bunt single and a triple tied the game at 2. Brennan Laird doubled to bring in Nate Lynch and take a 3-2 lead. An error allowed for three more runs to score before Alex Simun came in to relieve Ansara. Simun struck out Ian Bach to get the Berg out of trouble.
Parker Fronk, Kyle Slovick, and Long all singled to load the bases in the fourth. Rydzewski stayed hot at the plate with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 6-4. The home team answered in the bottom of the frame by scoring three more runs.
Long commenced the scoring in the monstrous fifth inning with a single to score Hershberger. Slovick followed by lining a single to right to load the bases. Freshman Kyle Jenkins delivered in his first collegiate at bat with a single through the left side to bring home Fronk. On the ensuing at bat, Fronk scored on a wild pitch.
Rydzewski brought HU to within one with an RBI groundout. A walk and a hit by pitch loaded the bases yet again, this time for Hershberger. A balk allowed Jenkins to tie the game before Hershberger drove a double to left centerfield to give HU an 11-9 advantage.
The Student Princes reloaded the bases after a hit by pitch and a walk. Long, a senior, hit a towering grand slam to right field to push HU to a six-run lead. Heidelberg added one more run off a Rydzewski single to cap off the 12-run inning and take a 16-9 lead.
In the sixth, Darrin Shirk belted a two-run homerun to centerfield, adding to the HU lead.
With runners on second and third in the bottom of the sixth, a passed ball allowed the Quakers to tack on a run. An RBI single plated one more for the Quakers, who still trailed 18-11.
The Student Princes finished their dynamic day at the plate with a two-run single in the seventh from Hershberger.
Earlham scored three in the eighth, but could not close the gap as HU left with the win.
