Baseball ends season with sweep of Wilmington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Heidelberg University baseball team wrapped up their 2016 season with a sweep of Wilmington College on Friday. The Student Princes shut out the Quakers 9-0 in game one before holding on late for a 7-5 win in the second game.

Heidelberg finishes the year with an 18-22 record after the sweep while Wilmington wraps up their year with a record of 4-35.

HU quickly took the lead early in game one, as a two-run triple by Darrin Shirk highlighted a four-run first inning for the Berg.

Starting pitcher Adam Manner kept the Quakers off of the board in the first three innings as Heidelberg extended their lead to 6-0 in the fourth by scoring a pair of unearned runs.

In the top of the eighth, the Student Princes tacked on two more runs when Cory Jacobs and Clayton Wielinski each drove in one to make it an 8-0 edge for HU.

Heidelberg scored one more unearned run in the 9th, but it would not matter, as the Berg pitching staff combined for a shutout in the 8-0 win.

Manner (4-5) finished his career in style, throwing seven shutout innings to earn the victory. He allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out five. Manner concluded his four years with 261.1 innings pitched, which ranks second all-time at Heidelberg. He finishes this year with a solid 3.32 ERA with 78.2 innings pitched on the season.

Fellow senior Ben Sniezek threw two scoreless innings in relief of Manner, recording a pair of strikeouts as he helped the Berg earn the shutout.

Shirk and Jacobs led Heidelberg's offense in game one, each recording three hits and a pair of runs driven in.

Heidelberg was the first to strike in game two as well, as they were able to score a run off of a Quaker error in the top of the 2nd to gain the early lead.

The Student Princes began to distance themselves from Wilmington in the fourth when a two-run single by Derek Hug highlighted a four run inning, giving HU a 5-0 advantage.

The Berg added on one more in the fifth and sixth innings while starting pitcher Kyle Fluharty continued to keep Wilmington off of the board, going six innings and allowing just two hits, no walks, and no runs while striking out eight, just one shy of his career high.

Wilmington was able to score their first runs of the day in the bottom of the seventh, as they plated five off of the Berg bullpen to cut the Heidelberg lead to just two.

That lead turned out to be enough, as HU held on for the 7-5 victory.

Fluharty (5-5) earned the victory in the final start of his career with his six shutout innings. Sam Ankrom threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief while Anthony Hajdu stuck out the side in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

Parker Fronk led Heidelberg in game two with three hits while Derek Hug ended his storied career at the Berg going 2-for-4 with two runs driven in and a walk.
