DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Heidelberg University baseball team rode a 10-run first inning to a dominating 16-5 win at Defiance College on Wednesday. The Student Princes pounded out 16 hits in the victory while freshman Mason Goodwin (1-0) picked up his first career win on the mound.

With the win, Heidelberg improved to 13-18 on the year while Defiance slipped to 15-14.

It did not take long for the Berg to get things going, as the first seven batters of the game reached base safely, scoring five runs before the Yellow Jackets recorded the first out of the game. Five different players recorded at least one RBI in the inning while Kyle Slovick and Derek Hug each had two hits in the frame as HU roared out to a 10-0 lead.

Defiance was able to plate a pair in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double, but Heidelberg answered in the third when a two-run single by Cory Jacobs extended the lead to 13-2.

The bats would then go relatively quiet until Jacobs drove in one more in the fifth, making the score 14-2.

Heidelberg would score two in the eighth, answered by three from Defiance in the bottom of the eighth, but things were well in hand at that point as HU cruised to the 16-5 win.

Goodwin earned the victory in his first career start, going six innings and allowing just two runs while striking out a pair.

Jacobs led the offensive explosion for Heidelberg with four hits and four RBI in the win. Darrin Shirk, Slovick, Hug, and Joe Walton each had multi-hit games as well.

Heidelberg will remain on the road this weekend when they return to Ohio Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Ohio Northern on Saturday. Game one of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Ada.
