New Concord, OH - The Heidelberg University baseball team outlasted the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies to take a Sunday afternoon doubleheader, 9-8 in a 14-inning thriller and 13-7.

The pair of victories moves the Berg back to .500 at 11-11 overall, 3-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Muskies slide to 11-11, 1-5 in OAC action.

The first game of the Sunday afternoon twinbill went 14 innings, clocked in at four hours and featured nine combined pitching changes. The four-hour bout came to a close after a game-winning two-run home run from Andrew Pokley in the top of the 14th. The second game was another back-and-forth contest until the Berg bats heated up for four runs in the seventh. The Heidelberg lead grew in the eighth and ninth, stymieing any would be Muskingum rally.

In the opening game, the Fighting Muskies took a 2-0 lead in the first and maintained the upperhand until the top of the 6th. Eric Devore led off the frame with a double to left center. On the ensuing at-bat, Keaton Mark belted a two-run homer to knot the game at 2-2. The Student Princes took the lead when Thomas Sauer rapped a fielder's choice that plated Adam McVicker.

The Muskies immediately fired back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh. The sides drew level again on a wild pitch from Muskie reliever Clark Jennings with Seth Scoville at the plate. Scoville's at-bat culminated with a sacrifice fly to give the Student Princes a 5-4 advantage.

Berg starter Ross Thompson went six full innings, surrendering six hits, and striking out three.

The Student Princes added to their advantage in the eighth when Hunt rapped a one-out sac fly to score Memphis Cutshall. Muskingum locked the bout at 6-6 with two runs in the bottom of frame. Both sides went 1-2-3 through the ninth, forcing extra innings. A breakthrough came in the 12th off the bat of Pokley. With two outs, Pokley blasted a solo home run to put the Berg in front, 7-6.

The Muskies earned the tying run in the bottom of the frame, on a wild pitch.

Following a scoreless 13th, Pokley capitalized again. With one out and Scoville in scoring position, the Troy, Michigan native laced a two-run home run to give the Student Princes a 9-7 advantage. Muskingum refused to go quietly, as Allex Santacroce hit a solo home run off of Ridge Clark with two outs. Clack dismissed the next batter and closed out game one.

Clark (2-0) earned the win in game one, his second of the campaign. The Vermillion native three two and a third, recording three strikeouts, one hit and a walk.

Game two only needed the scheduled nine innings to find a winner. The Berg drew first blood with an RBI double from Reese Kuhns in the second. The Muskies answered in the bottom of the second, but a solo-home run from Mark with two outs in the third inning broke the deadlock.

Muskingum pulled back even, 2-2, and again the Berg would break the tie. With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, an error from the Muskie shortstop scored Pokley and McVicker. The Berg advantage increased in the seventh and eighth, and a three run home run by Cayden Rollins in the top of the ninth was an exclamation point on stellar day in New Concord.

Brady Knizner (3-3) earned the win in game two, throwing seven and a third, tallying a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Heidelberg baseball returns to action on April 12 when the Student Princes host the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets at Peaceful Valley. First pitches for the OAC doubleheader are slated for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
