CINCINNATI/MASON, Ohio – The Heidelberg University men's tennis team picked up their first win of the season over the weekend, knocking off OAC foe Marietta on Saturday. The Student Princes finished the weekend trip south with a 1-2 record, falling to Mount St. Joseph on Friday on the road before defeating the Pioneers on Saturday and dropping a 9-0 match to Baldwin Wallace on Sunday in Mason.
FRIDAY: Mount St. Joseph 7 Heidelberg 2
In doubles play against the host Lions, Paul Claymier and Jamie Cole were in a close one at second doubles. The duo was able to pull out the win in an exciting 9-7 match.
Kyle Simpson picked up the lone win of the match in singles play, defeating Ian Stutz of MSJ with a 10-5 win in the tiebreaker. At second singles, Tyler Flickinger took his match to a tiebreaker as well, but he was unable to pull through, falling 10-6.
SATURDAY: Heidelberg 6 Marietta 3
Claymier and Cole continued their winning ways on Saturday, taking their match at second doubles 8-4. Kyle Boone and Simpson also found a way to win, taking an 8-6 match at third singles. Ben Moore and Flickinger dropped a tough 8-6 match at first doubles.
The Student Princes took four of the six matches in singles play, led by Simpson's dominant performance in the fifth singles match. He cruised his way to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Noah Lenz of the Pioneers. Moore, Flickinger, and Cole each won their match as well, propelling the Berg to the win.
SUNDAY: Baldwin Wallace 9 Heidelberg 0
It was a rough end to the trip for the Student Princes, as they were defeated by the Yellow Jackets in their final match of the trip.
The closest match of the day came at fourth singles, where Cole put up a fight, but fell in a 3-6, 2-6 match.
Heidelberg moved to 1-10 overall on the season with the 1-2 mark, also going to 1-3 in OAC play. Their next match is scheduled for Wednesday, April 15th, at John Carroll. That conference match is set to start at 3:30 p.m. in University Heights.
