TIFFIN, Ohio -- On Saturday, the Heidelberg University men's tennis team began competition in their 2019-20 season with a 7-2 loss at the hands of Shawnee State University.
Playing at home, the Student Princes found wins from
Porus Shroff at first singles and the doubles pairing of Shroff and
Noah Kennard at second doubles.
Shroff cruised to his first singles win, taking down Jacob Freeland 6-2, 6-4. Shroff stayed busy in his doubles match, as he paired with Kennard to defeat Rodney Spriggs and Caspar Nolte by a score of 8-3.
In second singles,
Tate Schoen fought hard to force a third set tiebreaker by winning the second set 6-3 after dropping the first set, 3-6. Unfortunately for Schoen, he ran out of steam and faltered in the tiebreaker as Zayden Rinehart of Shawnee took the win.
Also competing in singles was
Noah Bowman at third singles, where he fell 0-6, 0-6 to Austin Hanshaw.
Kyle Obrenski dropped fourth singles 1-6, 1-6, and
Jordan Robbins was overcome at sixth singles 2-6, 3-6.
In addition to Shroff and Kennard's pairing, Schoen and Robbins matched up at first singles against Freeland and Rinehart of Shawnee. The visitors took the matchup 1-8.
At third doubles, Bowman and
Jared Buchholz were upended 1-8.
The Student Princes will look for a more balanced showing on Thursday as they travel to Adrian College. First serve in Adrian is slated for 4 p.m.
