LEXINGTON, Ohio – Despite the frigid temperatures outside, the Heidelberg University men's and women's tennis team opened their spring schedule with a non-conference matchup with Adrian College. The women's team squeaked out a 5-4 victory while the men lost 9-0.
On the women's side, the lone doubles win was by veterans Sofey Fugate and Katie Strahan. At first doubles, the pair beat Adrian's Kaylee Bezcan and Arielle Williams 8-4.
The Student Princes won four of the six singles matches to secure the win. Fugate won at first singles, 7-6 (6-2) 6-3, at first singles over Bezcan. Strahan also picked up her second win of the day, defeating Williams 6-2 7-5.
Markilynn Hogle defeated McKenzie Krieg 6-2 6-2 at fourth singles and Siara Parick rallied to beat Victoria Watson, 2-6 6-2 6-2 at sixths.
Though the men were swept, Ben Moore fought valiantly in two tight matches. Moore and Tyler Flickinger fell at first doubles, losing 8-6 to Michael Mertz and Joey Loselle. In his singles match, Moore lost 6-0 7-5 to Brandon Brown.
The women's team faces Alma College in a non-conference neutral site match at Defiance on Tuesday. After that, both teams will prepare for their annual spring break trip to Hilton Head Island.
