'Berg Men's Tennis Goes Down Swinging to Crusaders

The Heidelberg University men's tennis team concluded the 2012-2013 season with a 5-0 defeat, dealt by the Capital Crusaders, in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament.

Despite the Student Princes (5-14, 2-7 OAC) fielding every position, the match was decided early forcing four matches to remain unfinished.

In doubles action, the duo of Cliff Goetz (Oak Harbor) and Zach Schwenning (Barberton) fell to their Capital University counterparts, Luke Buchanan and Spencer Walter, 9-8, after falling in the tiebreaker, 11-9.

The next two doubles contests would go to the Crusarders as the pairing of Dorian Kempf (Galion) and Matt McDivitt (Cortland/Lakeview) and the tandem of Dan Driscoll (University Heights/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and Brandon Lust (Bucyrus) fell 8-2 and 8-4, respectively.

In singles action, Goetz, the team's lone senior and number one player, was downed by Buchanan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1.

Cliff finishes the 2012-2013 season with an overall record of 5-14, 3-6 in the OAC.

The final completed match of the afternoon came from freshman Dan Driscoll, who was bested by Capitals Jared Judson, 6-2, 6-1.

Veteran head coach Jerry McDonald and the Heidelberg men will return to competition in the fall of 2013.
