MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team split on Friday, showing both the highs and lows of baseball as they dropped the opener before turning game two into a one-sided highlight reel.
The 16-run margin of victory in game two was, by far, Heidelberg's most dominant win over the Pioneers in program history. The Student Princes had beaten Marietta by nine on two occasions, marking their previous best.
GAME ONE: MARIETTA 10-13-1 BERG 2-4-4
Down 2-0 in the third,
Brayden Tucker led off with a home run to center.
Heidelberg equalized in the fourth when
Garrett LaBeau drove in
Braedy Limke with a ground out.
The Pioneers regained control in the bottom of the frame with three runs.
Marietta held Heidelberg scoreless through the remainder of the ball game, scoring five more runs.
GAME TWO: BERG 19-22-0 MARIETTA 3-8-2
Heidelberg bounced back in style with a 19-3 victory over Marietta, thanks to a monster 10-run inning that broke a 2-2 tie.
Thomas McGuire got things rolling, scoring on a
Logan Walpole double, while Grant Labeau added a single and later scored on a balk.
Walpole scored again on a Brayed Tucker groundout, and
Sam Schneider drove in
Simeon Betts with a grounder, making it 5-2.
The magic began after
Braedy Limke singled in Betts, Labeau doubled in two more runs, and Walpole singled to bring in Labeau and McGuire, capping the fourth inning at 10-2
The offense didn't stop there – McGuire crushed a 3-run homer in the fifth, Labeau and Winstead kept adding RBI's, and Betts drove in Walpole in the seventh inning, pushing the lead to 16-2.
In the eighth, Limke scored on a Winstead RBI single, and the ninth inning featured Schneider scoring on a Roberts double and Hood scoring on a Fields-Hood combination, finishing the day at 19-3.
Aidan Cummings earned the win with six strong innings, while 'Berg bats did all the talking, led by McGuire, Labeau, Walpole, and Winstead.
