SB battles for split with Pioneers

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Softball team continued its feast-or-famine output in a split with Marietta College on Friday. Heidelberg scratched out one hit in a 7-0 loss in the opener, then banged out 14 hits in an 8-3 win to salvage the doubleheader.

Heidelberg moved to 15-8 overall, 3-3 in the OAC.

GAME ONE:   MARIETTA 7-10-0  BERG  0-1-1

Marietta struck first with a solo home run in the second, then added another on a two-out double in the fourth.  They would tack on four in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Heidelberg was hitless until the bottom of the seventh. Ellie Tressler hit a long fly ball to the warning track in left that fell just out of the reach of the Pioneer fielder. HU would strand two in the frame.

GAME TWO:  BERG 8-14-0   MARIETTA 3-9-0

Heidelberg shook off their offensive woes from the first game in the first inning of the second game. Leah Arnett, who had a 16-game hitting streak snapped in the opener, tripled over the head of the right fielder, then scored on a single by Cara Meyer. Tressler drew a walk before Abbie Marshall laced a double up the alley in left center that drove in Meyer. Tressler scored on an RBI ground out by Hannah Hashman.

The Pioneers tied it in the second, but Heidelberg got back to work in the third.  Tressler led off with a triple to center and scored on a single inside the expertly-painted foul line in left. After a fielder's choice, Alexis Burton hit a double to deep center that scored Hashman. Two batters later, Arnett served a two-run single to center.  An infield single by Tressler capped the five-run inning.

Taylor Forrest was excellent in the circle, limiting the Pioneers to three runs on nine hits. She struck out four and did not give up a walk.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

Arnett's 16-game hitting streak was Heidelberg's longest since Marissa Smego had a 16-gamer in 2015 … In the past 20 years, only Mikaela Mitsch's 17-game streak in 2012 was longer.

UP NEXT:

After the short holiday weekend, Heidelberg will visit Wittenberg on Tuesday.
