H > W in Batte of the Bergs

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Berg on top, indeed! The Heidelberg University Softball team swept the Battle of the Bergs on Wednesday, upending Wittenberg, 5-2 and 5-3.  Heidelberg improved to 17-8 on the season.

Freshman Alexis Burton had four hits on the day, driving in three.

GAME ONE: BERG (H) 5-9-1    BERG (W) 2-7-1

Down one after one, Ellie Tressler ripped a double to left in the top of the second. After an error and a line out, Tressler trotted home on an RBI single by Burton. With two outs, Taylor Forrest delivered an RBI double, plating Abbie Marshall.

Knotted at two in the fourth, HU broke out for three runs. Adyson Bowe singled to left and advanced on a Burton fly out. Megan Miller broke the stalemate with a single to center that plated Bowe. Forrest came through again with a two-out RBI hit -- this time a single to left that drove in Miller. Hannah Hashman capped the offense with an RBI single up the middle.

The 5-2 lead was plenty for starting pitcher Haley Gockstetter, who improved to 10-2 on the season. She limited the Tigers to two runs on seven hits, striking out four.

GAME TWO: BERG (H) 5-7-2   BERG (W) 3-6-2

With one on in a scoreless second inning, Marshall gave a hearty thumbs up to a 3-2 pitch and belted it for her second home run of the season. One batter later, Burton fulfilled a promise to the instructor of her 8 a.m. class by hitting a home run -- her fifth of the season.

Up 3-1 in the third, Burton again delivered an RBI hit. Her base hit drove in Bowe.

The Tigers clawed back with a pair in the fourth, but Forrest stranded two and escaped further damage.

Pinch runner Ashlynne McAdow scored an insurance run in the sixth, racing home on a wild pitch.

Forrest (6-5) worked 4+ innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Gockstetter earned the save, throwing three innings of perfect ball. She retired all eight batters she faced, with the ninth out coming on a caught stealing.
