Berg doomed by late runs again

FT. PIERCE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University Baseball surrendered another handful of runs late, falling to Susquehanna University, 8-5. The Student Princes slipped to 5-3 on the young season.

Logan Winstead, Max Gutmann and Jack McKelley each had two hits in the loss.

Heidelberg drew first blood with a pair of runs in the third. Braedy Limke started the two-out rally with a single up the middle, then waltzed around the bases on walks drawn by Sam Schneider and Garett Labeau.  Winstead drove in a pair with a base hit, giving HU a short-lived lead.

The Riverhawks responded in the fourth with three runs taking a 3-2 lead.

Still down in the fifth, The Berg answered back. A throwing error and a double put two in scoring position with one out. Logan Walpole drove in the tying run on a ground out. Gutmann untied it with a base hit back through the box.

Again, however, Susquehanna battled back in quick fashion. A two-out double tied the game in the top of the sixth. The Riverhawks added one in the top of the eighth, and led 5-4.

Undeterred, HU went to work. McKelley ripped a leadoff double and departed for pinch runner Shane Jones. Jones moved up 90 on a ground out, then scored the tying run.

Susquehanna sent eight to the plate in the ninth, plating three runs.  HU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.

Henry Mates got the start for Heidelberg, going 3+ innings, striking out four and walking four. He allowed two earned runs. Aidan Cummings worked 5 innings, allowing three. Chris Mathis and Jasper Daniels worked the ninth inning.

Heidelberg will look to right the ship under the Florida sun on Sunday. They'll face Washington College at 1:30 p.m.
