FT. PIERCE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University completed a highly unconventional sweep of Washington College on Friday. The Student Princes closed out the lightning-delayed game started on Sunday, 20-10, then outlasted the Shoremen in the second game, 15-14 The second victory came via a walk-off double by Garrett Labeau.
The Princes' offense exploded for 17 hits, taking advantage of 14 walks issued by the Shoreman pitching to secure the dominant win in the game started on Sunday. Friday's game saw HU pound out another 19 hits, moving to 8-5 on the season.
SUNDAY'S GAME: BERG 20-17-4 WASHCOLL 10-14-2
On Sunday, Heidelberg wasted no time in establishing control, putting up runs in each of the first three innings. After a sacrifice fly by
Thomas McGuire opened the scoring in the 1st, the Berg added four more in the 2nd, highlighted by a two-RBI single from McGuire.
The lead stretched to 9-2 in the 3rd inning as
Braedy Limke drove in a run with a single and the team capitalized on a passed ball and a Shoreman error.
The Shoreman briefly threatened to make it a contest in the 4th inning. With a two-RBI single, followed immediately by a two-run home run, cutting the Student Prince lead to 9-7.
However, the Heidelberg response was swift and decisive. In the top of the 6th, the Berg blew the game open with a seven-run outburst. The inning featured a parade of extra-base hits, including RBI doubles from
Logan Winstead,
Thomas McGuire, and
Logan Walpole.
When the lightning arrived on Sunday, the Shoremen were in business. They had loaded the bases and scored on a wild pitch before the delay. When play resumed Friday, Washington was able to push across one more run.
Nonplussed, the Tricolor scored three times in the seventh. Washington would add a run in the ninth, but was unable to mount a rally.
FRIDAY'S GAME: BERG 15-19-0 WASHCOLL 14-15-5
The Shoreman led 3-0 after 1.5 innings, but The Berg put a six-spot on the board in the bottom of the second. Labeau tripled and scored on a single by Walpole. Tucker,
Cohen Sendelbach, and
Simeon Betts followed with singles, with the Betts base hit driving in two. An error, a sac fly and a McGuire single plated three more runs.
The teams traded single runs in the third. Sloppy play by the Shoremen allowed HU to score twice in the fourth, building a 9-4 lead.
Ahead 9-6 in the sixth, the Tricolor added four more runs, with Limke and
Grant Bomer contributing RBI doubles. In the seventh, Heidelberg was gifted another run and led 14-6.
The Shoremen used seven hits to score eight times in the eighth, knotting the game at 14 on a three-run homer by Drew Kinsey.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. With one out, McGuire singled through the left side. He raced around the bases for the winning run on a double up the power alley in right center by Labeau.
