Bomer's homer helps baseball salvage split

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team traded 4-3 decisions in the opening doubleheader of Ohio Athletic Conference action at Muskingum on Saturday. The Muskies won the opener and Heidelberg salvaged the split in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: MUSK 4-7-0   BERG 3-7-2

Heidelberg opened with a run in the top of the first. Logan Winstead singled and advanced on a passed ball. Thomas McGuire followed with an RBI double to right.  

The Muskies scored all four of their runs in the third, doing their damage with four hits and a walk. 

Brayden Tucker hit a solo homer in the fifth to cut into the Muskie lead. In the seventh, Simeon Betts drove in Chase Dussel with a sacrifice fly.  

Heidelberg went 1-2-3 in the eighth and the ninth. 

Logan Walpole started on the mound and went six full innings. Daniel Bowser worked two perfect innings of relief.  

GAME TWO: BERG 4-8-3   MUSK 3-8-0

Down 1-0 in the third, the Grant Bomer show began. The freshman doubled in a pair, giving HU a 2-1 advantage. 

In the fifth, tied at two, Bomer drilled a two-run homer. Muskingum halved their deficit with a run in the bottom of the inning.  

Clinging to a one-run lead, Heidelberg danced out of trouble in the eighth and ninth. The Muskies left the bases loaded in both innings. 

Aidan Cummings worked 5.1 innings of relief to pick up the win. He allowed two runs on three hits. Tyler Verdin picked up the save with a scoreless ninth. 

UP NEXT: Heidelberg is slated to host Albion for a single game on Tuesday. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
