TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team gritted out a hard-fought 12-9 win over Hiram College on a pleasant Saturday inside Hoernemann Stadium.
Malachai Davis scored four times and was one of four 'Berg players with a multi-goal performance, and added two assists for a six-point performance.
In the first quarter,
Rayce Septer scored twice and
Colin Parker once as the teams jostled for an advantage.
Squared up at three through the first 15 minutes, Hiram went up 5-4 midway through the second. HU responded with three goals in three minutes … one from
Dante Coffman and two from Davis, and led 7-6 at half.
The third belonged to the Student Princes, who scored all four of the period's goals.
Kaivin Jones and Davis each scored twice.
HU went up 12-6 midway through the fourth on Coffman's third. Hiram wiggled closer, scoring the final three of the game, but the 'Berg defense was able to keep the Terriers at bay.
Coffman had three goals, and Jones had five points (two goals and three assists).
Defensively, six HU players tallied two caused turnovers.
Wilson Runnette made 10 saves in goal.
HU returns to action on March 7 at Earlham. The game time has been moved to 5 p.m.
