HIRAM, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team put together one of its most complete halves of the season on Saturday afternoon, but a decisive third-quarter swing proved costly as the Student Princes fell 79–73 at Hiram in non-conference play.
Heidelberg controlled the opening half, setting the tone with energy on the glass and efficient interior scoring. The Student Princes led for more than 18 minutes before halftime and carried a 40–30 advantage into the break after outscoring the Terriers 22–14 in the second quarter. Heidelberg's work on the offensive boards and ability to convert second-chance opportunities kept Hiram from gaining early momentum
The tide turned in the third quarter as Hiram found its rhythm from the perimeter. The Terriers erupted for 27 points in the period, shooting 50 percent from the field and knocking down timely 3-pointers to erase Heidelberg's lead. Despite strong efforts inside from the Student Princes, Hiram closed the quarter on a late push to take a 57–55 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes
Heidelberg battled back in the fourth, briefly tying the game and continuing to compete in the paint, where the Student Princes held a 40–34 scoring edge for the game. However, Hiram's efficiency at the free-throw line and a pair of late baskets down the stretch allowed the Terriers to maintain separation in the closing moments
Brenna Williams led Heidelberg with 19 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double.
Malia Mizeres added 17 points and knocked down four three-pointers, while
Tori See chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds.
Olivia Nolting facilitated the offense with seven assists as Heidelberg finished with 17 assists on 29 made field goals.
Despite the setback, Heidelberg forced 21 Hiram turnovers and held advantages in second-chance points (17–6) and bench scoring (24–6).
