OBERLIN, Ohio -- With her team struggling to score in the offensive third, Heidelberg University Women's Soccer Head Coach Maddie McLaughlin issued a challenge to her players.
Finish. Put the ball on frame, and finish.
And on a humid Wednesday evening in Oberlin, her top players answered the call.
The result? A much-needed 2-0 victory over the Yeowomen, and a boost of confidence for the Student Princes as non-conference action begins to wind down.
Heidelberg improved to 2-4-2 on the season and Oberlin slipped to 3-3-2.
Mallory Zavatchen out-hustled an Oberlin player in the midfield, running on to a loose ball. Two dribbles later, she slotted a gorgeous pass between two defenders for speedy forward
Brianna Braatz. Braatz one-timed it, beating the keeper five-hole for her fourth goal of the year. Heidelberg led, 1-0, in the fifth minute.
In the 43rd minute, Braatz was taken down in the box, earning a penalty kick. No stranger to the spot, veteran
Syd Hewer calmly stepped up and buried the PK -- her third goal of the campaign.
The Student Princes, especially the formidable defenders, made the 2-0 lead stand up for the remainder of the game. Goalkeeper
Brigid Enright made five saves and earned her second consecutive clean sheet.
The final non-conference game of the regular season is at home on Sunday. Kickoff with Mount St. Joseph is scheduled for 2 p.m.
