TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team picked up a sorely-needed result at home on a warm Wednesday afternoon at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex. Two quick second half goals propelled the Student Princes to a 2-1 win over Alma.
Heidelberg moved to 1-4-1 on the season while Alma slipped to 5-2.
The Berg was the aggressor throughout the game, but especially in the scoreless first half. HU outshot the Scots, 7-1, in the opening 45 minutes.
An Alma foul just outside the penalty area gave HU a restart in a dangerous position. Senior
Syd Hewer stepped up and blistered a shot that whistled past the left edge of a three-person wall. With some spin on it, the ball dipped behind the wall and beat the goalkeeper to the near side.
Up 1-0, HU kept the pressure on. Just over a minute after Hewer's tally,
Caitlyn Cross dribbled down the left wing. Cutting in behind a defender, Cross served the ball to the left edge of the six-yard box. There,
Brianna Braatz boxed out a defender and flicked the ball into the net.
Heidelberg held the 2-0 until the 73rd minute, Alma's Emily Ahearn corralled a loose ball on a weird deflection at the top of the penalty area and drove it past a leaping
Brigid Enright.
Enright and the 'Berg defense stifled any further attempts from the visitors, securing their first win of the year.
The Student Princes return to action on Saturday at Geneva. Gametime with the Golden Tornadoes is slated for 1 p.m.
