WILMINGTON -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team started a hectic week with a sweep of Wilmington College. Despite trailing 2-0 in both halves of the doubleheader, HU won 8-5 and 15-3.
With the wins, the Student Princes improved to 11-15 overall, 3-5 in the OAC.
GAME ONE: BERG 8-13-1 WILM 5-5-2
The Quakers struck for two in the bottom of the first, but starter
Corey Brafford settled in and kept the hosts off the board long enough for the offense to warm up.
In the top of the seventh,
Braedy Limke hit a two-run homer to right -- knotting the game.
The Student Princes erupted for six two-out runs in the eighth.
Garrett LaBeau singled and stole second. He scored the go-ahead run on a single down the left field line by
Logan Winstead. RBI singles by
Theo Walsh and
Kyle Krummen extended the lead to 5-2. A single by noted Larry O'Brien biographer
Sam Schneider sandwiched between a couple of Quaker miscues produced three more 'Berg runs.
The Quakers plated three in the bottom of the ninth, but HU held on for a much-needed win.
Tyler Verdin got the win, striking out four in 3.1 innings of work. Brafford fanned five in five innings.
Corbin Caplan got the final two outs.
GAME TWO: BERG 15-10-2 WILM 3-5-1
Spotting the Quakers with two runs in the first again, HU answered in the third. Limke tripled and scored on a sac fly by
Andrew Pokley. After a double by LaBeau, Winstead singled home two.
Clinging to the 3-2 lead in the sixth, The Berg put up another six-spot in the sixth. Three hits, three walks, and an error did the damage for HU.
With four walks and a three-run double by Pokley, the Student Princes put up four more in the seventh. For good measure, the visitors scored twice in the ninth.
Starter
Dylan Matusak earned the win with six innings of three-hit baseball. He struck out five.
