Kroah Shines in Doubleheader Split

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team continued a busy week of baseball with a doubleheader against John Carroll on Wednesday, salvaging a split. The Blue Streaks won the opener, 10-2, but the Student Princes nabbed the nightcap, 10-3.

Heidelberg's record moved to 12-16 overall, 4-6 in the OAC.

GAME ONE: JOHN CARROLL 10-16-0 HEIDELBERG 2-5-1

John Carroll took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, then added one in the top of the second. The Blue Streaks made it a 6-0 lead with a pair in the fifth.  John Carroll would add two more in the sixth and seventh innings before Heidelberg put one on the board.

Garrett LaBeau started off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to center. After a wild pitch helped LaBeau get to second and Logan Winstead's groundout moved him to third, it was Logan Walpole with a deep single to center field, bringing LaBeau across for the first run for the home team.

The visitors tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth, but Heidelberg would respond with their second score in back to back innings. Kyle Krummen walked in the bottom of the eighth, and made it to second on a stolen base. Sam Schneider then added a double to left field as Krummen raced home to cut into the Blue Streaks lead, but that would be the last run scored.

GAME TWO: BERG 10-13-3  JCU 3-6-1

John Carroll got things rolling in the top of the first with a run, but the inning belonged to Heidelberg.

Theo Walsh led off the bottom half with a walk and advanced on a single by Braedy Limke. Andrew Pokley followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Walsh. Winstead then gave the Student Princes the lead with an RBI double that brought in Limke. LaBeau added to the rally with a double of his own, plating Pokley and moving Winstead to third. After a two-out walk to Logan Walpole loaded the bases, John Carroll made a rare first inning pitching change. The move didn't pay off immediately, as the first pitch to Kyle Krummen resulted in a walk, forcing in another run and extending Heidelberg's lead to 4-1.

The score remained that way until the seventh. Walsh ripped a single down the first base line and moved to second on a sac bunt from Schneider. Back-to-back doubles by Limke and Pokley brought in two runs. Winstead followed with an RBI base hit, giving HU a 7-1 advantage through seven.

Heidelberg added three more in the bottom of the eighth, plating runs on a sac fly, a bases loaded walk and bases loaded balk.

JCU pushed across a pair of runs in the ninth, but wouldn't get closer.

Everyone on the diamond contributed to the win, but perhaps the most impressive performance was delivered through the left hand of starter Orion Kroah.

Kroah dazzled through seven innings pitched, generating almost exclusively soft contact. After allowing one run in the first, he hurled six scoreless frames and struck out four, and stranded all nine runners who were able to reach.
