Matusak sizzles in split

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Baseball team salvaged a split on opening day of Ohio Athletic Conference play. The Student Princes fell in the opener, 9-8, then responded with a 3-0 victory in the night cap.

Heidelberg moved to 8-10 overall, 1-1 in the OAC.

GAME ONE: CAP 9-10-4   BERG 8-8-2

After gifting the Comets with four unearned runs in the top of the first, HU scored single runs in the first two frames.

Down 6-2 in the fourth, HU tied the game with a four-spot. Kyle Krummen scored on a double steal, then Andrew Pokley bounced a single through the right side that plated Sam Schneider. Thomas McGuire roped a single to right center, tying the game as Garrett LaBeau and Pokley scored.

The visitors scored once in the sixth and twice in the eighth, taking a three-run lead.

Heidelberg threatened in the ninth, but fell short.  The Student Princes loaded the bases with no outs. After a sacrifice fly, HU reloaded the bags with a walk. Schneider, who hit a game-tying double in Wednesday's win over Hiram, was hit by a pitch, bringing HU to within one. The Comets squeezed out the win, inducing a popout to end it.

GAME TWO:  BERG 3-9-0  CAP 0-6-1

In dire need of a strong start, Heidelberg turned to veteran starter Dylan Matusak -- and Matusak turned in a gem. The starter turned in seven innings of shutout baseball, taking a no-hitter into the sixth. He fanned seven and limited the Comets to three hits.

Heidelberg scratched a run across in the fourth when Logan Walpole drew a bases loaded walk.  In the sixth, Walpole singled in Chase Dussel and Braden Keeney drove in Logan Winstead.

Justin Wilkins earned the save in relief, allowing no runs on three hits.
