TIFFIN -- When the baseball teams of Heidelberg University and Ohio Wesleyan meet, the unusual is bound to happen. Last year, HU hit two grand slams, but lost. This year? The Student Princes enjoyed a walk-off win that came via a four-base error. The Berg beat the Battling Bishops, 4-3, on a blustery Sunday afternoon in Peaceful Valley.
Heidelberg grabbed an early lead, scoring three in the bottom of the second.
A single and two walks loaded with one out.
Theo Walsh drove in the first run with a ground out to second.
Kyle Krummen followed with a double down the left field line, scoring
Cort Kramer and
Connor Gambino.
'Berg starter
Nicolas Lavelle faced the minimum through five innings -- bolstered by four double plays from his infielders.
OWU opened the seventh with three straight doubles, scoring twice, but reliever
Payton Moser retired the next three hitters to preserve the lead. The Battling Bishops would tie the game in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
After
Orion Kroah (W, 1-2) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, Heidelberg walked off in unusual fashion.
Theo Walsh lofted a fly ball to the track in right center. The ball popped out of the right fielder's glove and caromed away from both outfielders. Head Coach
Chad Fitzgerald did not hesitate to wave around Walsh, who scored without a throw.
Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday at Wooster. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
