Hew gotta be kidding! Syd's goal caps comeback

Down 3-0, 'Berg roars back to beat Capital for first time since 2001

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team conceded a goal to host Capital University early in the first half. The Comets added another in the first and tacked on one early in the second half. Facing a 3-0 deficit, on the heels of the final-minute heartbreak on Saturday at Wilmington, the Student Princes could have packed it in and accepted the loss.

But they didn't.

Instead, The Berg picked itself up off the Bernlohr Stadium turf and fought back -- in a big way.

It started with an incredible individual effort by Syd Hewer. Running onto a pass up the left side, the senior tried to slip a pass ahead that got deflected. Resorting to Plan B, Hewer took a touch to the outside with her left foot then drilled a shot past the keeper to the far post. The goal was her sixth of the season.

The comeback continued in the 67th minute. On a corner kick from the right side, Ella Jacobs served a ball into the six where defender Olivia Perry ran onto it and volleyed it into the net.

Now down one, Heidelberg had a restart from 33 yards out in the 75th. Jacobs sailed a shot on goal, beating the Comet goalkeeper high to the right side -- knotting the match.

From down 3-0 to tied, the Student Princes could have played conservatively and settled for the draw.

But they didn't.

Instead, The Berg turned to Hewer. And Hewer delivered -- in a big way.

With less than a minute on the clock, Ella Perry drew a foul on the right side about 30 yards from goal. Hewer lined up the restart and buried it -- absolutely buried it -- far post, upper 90.

Hewer celebrated with a fist pump and received hugs from the 10 other players on the field. The stunned Comets responded with a feeble long ball that Brigid Enright gobbled up. Her punt sailed harmlessly up the field as time expired.

The comeback win was Heidelberg's first victory over Capital since 2001 -- snapping a string of 24 in a row. And what a win it was.

Enright had seven saves, helping HU improve to 4-5-2 overall, 1-1 in the OAC. Capital dipped to 6-4-1, 1-1.

Heidelberg returns home to host Marietta on Saturday. Kickoff at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex is slated for 2 p.m.
