Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio -- On an unseasonably hot fall Saturday, the Heidelberg University Football team walked away with a 30-27 win over visiting Capital on Homecoming at Hoernemann Stadium. Quarterback
Ty Poorman had a memorable afternoon, throwing for a career-high 258 yards for the game, and being crowned Homecoming Royalty at halftime.
Heidelberg moved to 2-2 on the year, 1-1 in the OAC. Capital, markedly improved from seasons gone by, slipped to 1-3, 1-2.
Capital struck first with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter, but Heidelberg answered back in lightning-quick fashion. Poorman found
Dmitry Peters for a 47-yard bomb, then followed it with a 17-yard touchdown to Peters. The two-play drive took 34 seconds.
Pooman found a wide-open
Shae Sparks for a three-yard pitch-and-catch, but a missed extra point put HU ahead, 13-3.
Late in the half, Heidelberg went up 20-3 with a
Cole Poorman jet sweep touchdown from three yards out and an
Ethan Ramsdail PAT.
Heidelberg took possession again with 34 seconds left, but Capital picked off a deflected pass at midfield and returned it to the 'Berg 21. With one second left in the half, Comets QB Tyler Love stepped out of bounds at the 1 following a 14-yard scramble, setting up a one-yard plunge for Zion Solomon. HU led, 20-10, at halftime.
Having won the coin toss and deferring possession to the second half, Capital opened with a 10-play, 72-yard drive that resulted in another field goal. Undeterred, Heidelberg responded with a 12-play, 87-yard march down the field that ended with a 10-yard touchdown screen pass to
Korbyn Haley. The Student Princes led after three, 27-13.
The 'Berg defense forced a turnover on downs in the red zone, but went three-and-out on the ensuing possession. The Comets used the great field position to strike quickly, scoring on a 31-yard touchdown.
Looking to drain the clock, but also hoping to score points, Heidelberg went on an 11-play drive aided by two Capital personal fouls. Heidelberg settled for a 28-yard field goal by Ramsdail that trickled through despite being deflected at the line.
Not ready to call it quits, Capital scored another touchdown -- going 75 yards on three plays. The ensuing onside kick was bobbled by Heidelberg, but rolled out of bounds. The Student Princes were able to kill the clock from there.
Drew Miller picked up 122 yards on the ground, going over 100 for the second straight game.
Micah Willink had a team-high five receptions.
Mason Villarreal and
Bryant Pfeifer each had seven tackles.
Nick Jacoby had five stops, including a 13-yard sack.
"We played with a lot of really good momentum in the first half. Capital did a great job of turning one of our mistakes into momentum for them in the second half," said Head Coach
Scott Donaldson. All credit to them, they have a really tough football team that fought for 60 pure minutes. I'm proud of the way we fought. I'm proud of the way we got the win.
Heidelberg hits the road next weekend, traveling across the Buckeye State to Marietta. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
