MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Football team scored the final 16 points of a 30-27 win over host Marietta College on Saturday. For the second time this season, the Student Princes scored in all three phases of the game -- helping The Berg overcome a few costly miscues.
Heidelberg improved to 3-2 overall, 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta slipped to 3-2, 2-2.
With his team trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter,
Korbyn Haley gave Heidelberg hope with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, up the middle then down the Marietta sideline.
Marietta responded with another touchdown and looked poised to score again late in the half. A botched handoff bounced into the hands of
Kris Williams, who picked it up and ran 81 yards toward the Ohio River for a touchdown. Heidelberg trailed at halftime, 21-14.
The Pioneers capitalized on a muffed punt early in the third quarter, scoring their fourth touchdown of the game -- but the extra point went wide.
Down 27-14, Heidelberg found success on offense. Moving the ball near midfield, HU faced a 3rd-and-8. Quarterback
Ty Poorman stepped up to avoid the rush and found
Solomon Sandoval for a 16-yard completion. A 21-yard pass to
Micah Willink put HU in the red zone, but the Student Princes were forced to settle for a 24-yard field goal by
Ethan Ramsdail.
After the defense forced a 3-and-out, HU went back to work.
Drew Miller had the big play, busting off a 29-yard carry. Haley scored on a one-yard plunge, Ramsdail kicked the PAT, and all of a sudden -- Heidelberg was only down 27-24.
With the momentum clearly on the side of the Student Princes, the defense stepped up.
Griffin Reese picked off a pass at the Heidelberg 44 and returned it to the Pioneer 35. The Berg needed three plays to find paydirt -- a nine-yard run by Miller, a 19-yard pass to
Dmitry Peters, and a seven-yard touchdown run by Miller. A bad snap kept the score at 30-27 with 7:58 to play.
Following a Pioneer punt, a 'Berg red zone fumble gave the ball back to the hosts on their seven with 3:35 left. Marietta moved the ball to midfield, but faced a 4th-and-2. The Pioneer ball carrier was stuffed at the line and
Kobee Hooker knocked the ball loose. Marietta recovered, but -- by rule -- was unable to advance it. Heidelberg took over on downs.
Marietta would get the ball back, but was unable to get into field goal range before another turnover on downs. Poorman took a knee on Heidelberg's second-straight 30-27 victory.
Austin Niederkohr had a team-high 10 tackles and a 19-yard tackle for loss. Bryant Pfeiffer had seven tackles, including a sack.
Heidelberg welcomes Mount Union to Hoernemann Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff in The Castle is slated for 1:30 p.m.
