TIFFIN -- Missed opportunities proved costly for the Heidelberg University Football team in a 38-6 setback to No. 2 Mount Union on Saturday. Down eight at halftime, the Student Princes were outscored in the second half, 24-0.
Heidelberg slipped back to .500 at 3-3, 2-2. Mount Union stayed perfect, now 6-0, 4-0.
The Purple Raiders scored on their first two drives, taking a 14-0 lead.
After taking the ball into Mount territory, but coming up empty on their first two possessions, Heidelberg scored on their third drive. With excellent starting field position because of a partially blocked punt by
Thomas Zacharko, Heidelberg went 41 yards on nine plays.
Ty Poorman plunged into the end zone from a yard out, but
Ethan Ramsdail's extra point sailed wide. HU trailed, 14-6.
On the ensuing Mount Union possession,
Aaryion Manley picked off a pass and returned it 48 yards to the Mount 15. Disaster struck on the next play, when Mount intercepted a pass in the end zone.
Mount scored touchdowns on all three of its third quarter possessions, grabbing a stranglehold on momentum. They tacked on a field goal in the fourth.
Offensively, Poorman was 10-for-22 for 112 yards passing and
Drew Miller carried the ball 25 times for 84 yards.
Dmitry Peters was the leading receiver with three catches for 63 yards.
Tyler Jackson had a team-high nine tackles.
Trey Farris had four, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Kevion Grant added a strip-sack.
Heidelberg will look to regroup next Saturday at Muskingum. Kickoff in New Concord is slated for 1:30 p.m.
