WOOSTER -- On the road for the first time in the new year, the Heidelberg University Women's Basketball team faltered, losing to the College of Wooster, 73-64. Overcoming a five-minute scoring drought to start the second half, HU managed to take a brief lead in the fourth, but were done in by costly turnovers down the stretch.
Chloe Gilbert had a team-high 15 points and
Jewel Persinger added 14.
Morgan Altenburger contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Returning to the lineup for the first time since the end of the 2022-23 season,
Hallie Rogers tallied nine points and four steals.
Wooster scored the final five points of a remarkably close first half, taking a 34-30 lead into halftime.
Heidelberg was scoreless in the third until
Emma Keto split a pair at the line with 5:17 left, ending a 12-0 run for the Scots.
Trailing by as many as 11, Heidelberg began to chip away at the deficit. Persinger played a big role, scoring six straight at one point. Wooster led, 49-43, after three.
The Student Princes opened the final stanza with an 8-0 run in a 95-second span. The teams jockeyed for the lead over the next two minutes of action, with HU taking a 55-53 lead on a pull-up jumper by
Abby Tier with 6:25 left.
Wooster responded with a 6-0 run, bookended by baskets from Mackenzie Riccitelli, who finished with a game-high 29 points. HU got back to within one at 59-58, but the Scots connected on 12-of-16 from the line in the final 4:46 to seal the victory.
HU held a 45-37 edge on the glass, including a 15-7 margin on the offensive end. That yielded a 10-2 advantage in second chance points for The Berg.
The Student Princes visit No. 14 Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
