TIFFIN -- Despite an early two-goal advantage, the Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team was on the short end of a 15-4 score against visiting Marietta College on Saturday. Heidelberg slipped to 4-9 overall, 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
Heidelberg struck first, with
Benjamin Evans shooting on the run during HU's opening possession. Three minutes later,
Tyler Alexander capitalized on a man-up opportunity and put Heidelberg ahead 2-0.
Marietta (7-5, 3-1) answered with their first less than a minute later.
Teams traded unfruitful possessions until
Rayce Septer scored for the Student Princes with 5:05 to play in the first. The Pioneers scored before the end of the period and trailed 3-2 after one.
The visitors outscored the hosts 7-0 in the second, including a backbreaking spurt of three goals in 45 seconds with less than two minutes to play in the half.
Extending their run into the third and fourth quarters, Marietta scored 14 goals in a row before Heidelberg responded with one. Late in the fourth,
Quincy Grevious took a pass from
Rayce Septer and beat the goalkeeper.
In goal,
Wilson Runnette made six saves on the 43 levied toward the net. Grievous,
Sonny Varrati and
Jacob Morgan all caused two turnovers.
Heidelberg is back in action at Ohio Northern on Wednesday. The game was moved up to a 5 p.m. start.
