TIFFIN -- A disappointing Monday at Frann's Field yielded a pair of narrow losses for the Heidelberg University Softball team. Capital won the opener, 2-0, then held on for an 11-10 win in the nightcap.
Capital scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, giving starter lefty Megan Mlinaric more than enough offense. Mlinaric threw a complete game shutout, scattering four hits.
In the second game, Heidelberg held a 3-0 lead after three -- scoring once in the first and twice in the second.
The Comets were gifted three runs in the fourth because of two costly errors, but HU broke out the bats in the bottom of the fifth.
Lillie Robeson reached on an error and moved to third on
Gabbie Stallbaum's third double of the day.
Morgan Woycitzky poked a double down the left field line to put The Berg ahead, 4-3.
Ellie Tressler added a run with a sacrifice fly, then
Murissa Drown ripped a single to left, giving HU a short-lived 6-3 lead.
Capital regained the lead with four in the top of the sixth, then tacked on another four in the seventh.
Down 11-6, Heidelberg eschewed waving the white flag and opted to fight back. Tressler started with a one-out single before Drown reached on a throwing error.
Aubrey Conklin drove in a run with a double, then scored on
Caitlynn Newlen's two-run double.
Jade Torres had an infield single that put runners on the corners, putting the tying run on base.
Ryley Pittman made it 11-10 with a sacrifice fly. Down to their final out, Robeson was hit by a pitch, pushing the tying run into scoring position. The Comets, however, sealed the win with a fly out.
Heidelberg is scheduled to return to action at Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday, but a shaky weather forecast may alter those plans. Any changes will be posted on BergAthletics.com
