Five-run fifth boosts baseball

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – Boosted by a five-run fifth inning, the Heidelberg University Baseball team knocked off Bluffton University on Tuesday afternoon, 12-5. The Student Princes notched nine hits and drew seven walks in the win against the Beavers. HU improved to 6-2 on the season.

Andrew Cook got the start for the Student Princes, he went 5.1 innings giving up eight hits and one run. He also fanned three in the win. Justin WIlkins, Ben Bliss and Mac Metz totaled 3.2 innings of work for HU.

Braedy Limke went 3-for-4 on the afternoon while Andrew Pokley added two hits.

Cook got things going in the bottom of the second when he laced a one-out double down the left field line. Andrew Pokley followed with a walk. Reece McNeely came to the dish with two outs and singled. On the play, Cook scored on a misplayed ball in left.  Limke's hot bat continued when he hit a double to the left field wall, allowing Pokley and McNeely to score. HU led 3-0 after two.

Cook worked himself out of a bases loaded jam with two outs getting the Beavers to fly out to right field. The next inning Cook again found himself in trouble but was able to get out of the inning only giving up one run. Adam McVicker aided with a nice throw from right field to home plate to gun a runner out.

The bottom of the fourth saw Pokley lead off with a single and freshman Theo Walsh draw a walk. Limke took one off the foot, loading the bases. With two outs, Camden Farley took yet another hit-by-pitch which allowed a runner to score. The Student Princes took a 4-1 advantage into the fifth.

Two walks and a hit-by-pitch set Heidelberg up to add on some insurance runs in the fifth. McNeely drew another walk, adding one more run for HU. Limke came to the plate next and did what he does best, ripping a one-out, bases-clearing triple down the right side. An Aidan Corrigan sac fly helped give Heidelberg a 9-1 cushion after five.

A Pokley double in the bottom of the sixth setup an RBI opportunity for Walsh and he capitalized with a single to left field, making the score 10-1.

Bluffton was able to add three runs in the top of the seventh and one in the eighth to cut their deficit to 9-5.

Miscues from Bluffton allowed Heidelberg to score two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, stretching their lead to 12-5.
