Baseball wins in extras over Wabash

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – The Heidelberg University Baseball team had yet another extra inning win, this time knocking off Wabash College in 10 innings, 8-6. Adam McVicker broke two ties in the game, one off a double in the eighth and single in the 10th, both scoring Aidan Corrigan

Payton Moser got the start on the hill against the Little Giants. He went two innings, giving up six runs on seven hits. Vincent Marimpietri and Corey Brafford combined for eight innings of work, totaling four hits and one run while fanning four in the win.

Corrigan went 3-for-4 at the plate, while McVicker went 3-for-6 with two crucial RBI in the game. Camden Farley and Andrew Pokley also added two RBI's in the victory.

After a day off, the Berg got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning. A lead-off walk for HU was followed by a Corrigan single through the right side, giving Heidelberg runners on the corners. Farley followed with a single, scoring a run.

Thomas Sauer drew a one out walk to give the Student Princes bases loaded. After an Adam McVicker lineout, the next two batters were hit by pitches, giving HU two more runs.

Wabash got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, making it 3-2 after one. The Little Giants added four runs the next inning, taking the 6-3 lead.

With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Kyle Mottice found the grass in the outfield, singling to the right side and plating a run to cut the HU deficit to 6-4. Corrigan took one off the leg with bases loaded, adding another run for the Student Princes. Farley drew Heidelberg's fifth walk of the game, tying the game at 6-6.

Vincent Marimpietri was in a small jam in the bottom of the fourth, as he had two on with two outs. He was able to get the Little Giant batter to lineout to second, saving any threat of scoring.

In the top of the eighth, a Corrigan lead-off walk and a sac bunt from Farley gave HU a runner in scoring position with one out. McVicker came to the dish and hit a double down the left field line, making way for Corrigan to score. Heidelberg led 7-6.

The Little Giants deficit was short lived as they added a run in the bottom half, tying the game at 7-7.

Corrigan stayed hot, starting extra innings with a one-out single. Farley then laced a single to left center, allowing the speedster to advance to third. McVicker came through again in a tie, this time singling, giving the Student Princes the 8-7 lead. Andrew Pokley drew a bases-loaded, two-out hit-by-pitch, adding an insurance run heading into the bottom of the 10th.

Corey Brafford did his job in the final frame getting the first batter to strike out, then was able to force a double play to end the game.

Heidelberg will be back tomorrow for a doubleheader as they take on Babson College at 12:30 p.m. and Kean University at 4:00 p.m.
