PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida – The Heidelberg University Baseball team knocked off Saint John's University in 13 innings on Monday, 8-3. HU's five-run inning in the top of the 13th broke the Johnnies' backs, and an incredible pitching performance from
Orion Kroah helped seal the deal for the Student Princes.
Dylan Matusak got the start for Heidelberg. He went six innings, giving up three hits and three runs, and struck out nine. Kroah came in relief for the final seven innings and did not allow a single hit. He fanned six in the win.
Thomas Sauer led HU at the plate with three hits and two RBI.
Aidan Corrigan added two hits of his own.
Aidan Corrigan and
Adam McVicker got the Berg bats going early with back-to-back singles. With two outs,
Thomas Sauer came to the plate and ripped one down the left field line, clearing the bases.
Andrew Pokley followed up with a single, scoring Sauer. HU took the early 3-0 advantage.
The Johnnies struck in the bottom of the third, adding two runs to cut the HU lead to 3-2.
Matusak found himself in a jam in the fourth after walking the first batter and giving up a single to the next Johnnie hitter. A wild pitch allowed runners to move over, setting up a sac fly for Saint John's, tying the game 3-3.
A lead-off double and a hit-by-pitch had HU in early trouble in the fifth. But Matusak dug in and was able to get a Johnnie to ground out, then struck the next two batters out to get out of the inning unscathed.
Both teams were unable to get anything going after the fifth inning, sending the game into extra innings. HU threatened in the top of the tenth as they had runners on the corners with two outs but were unable to capitalize.
The Heidelberg bats finally came alive in the 13th, as
Camden Farley led things off with a single to left field. A McVicker walk was followed by the hot hitting Sauer singling to left field, giving HU bases loaded and no outs.
A wild pitch later scored Farley giving Heidelberg their first lead since the fourth inning. The Berg kept things rolling when
Andrew Pokley hit a ground ball to first baseman who threw home too late allowing McVicker to score.
Cort Kramer hit a fly ball into deep center giving way for Sauer to tag up and score.
Braedy Limke's first hit of the day was timely as he laced a double down the left field line clearing the bases for HU.
Kroah went 1-2-3 the next inning giving Heidelberg the 8-3 victory.
The team is back tomorrow as they take on Bluffton University before their off day on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 11 p.m.
