Alma slips past 'Berg

TIFFIN -- In their final tune-up before conference play, the Heidelberg University Softball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader to Alma College. The Scots won 4-1 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

Murissa Drown and Caitlynn Newlen both notched four hits on the brisk afternoon at Frann's Field.

Heidelberg slipped to 7-13 overall and Alma improved to 13-5.

GAME ONE: ALMA 4-10-1   BERG 1-4-0

The visitors scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, taking a 4-0 lead into the home half of the seventh.

Limited to one hit through six, Heidelberg got their lone run using three hits in the seventh. Newly-named OAC Scholar Athlete of the Month Gabbie Stallbaum led off the final frame with a long double to left center. After moving to third on a single by Murissa Drown, she scored on a base hit by Caitlynn Newlen. With the tying run at the plate, Alma retired the final two batters to seal the win.

Jessica Voitko started and went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Kailyn Kroll allowed two runs on six hits in the remaining 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO: ALMA 3-6-1   BERG 2-7-4

Scoreless in the top of the fifth, the Scots pushed an unearned run across the plate. Alma added two insurance runs in the seventh.

As they did in the opener, Heidelberg fought valiantly in the seventh. Stallbaum drew a one-out walk and sprinted home on a double to the gap in right center by Drown. Newlen followed with a single to right that plated Drown. With the winning run at the plate, Alma retired the final batter to seal the win.

Caitlin Dems allowed one unearned run on one hit in five full innings. Ryley Pittman worked the final two frames.
