Baseball bags 31 hits in sweep of Comets

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With 27 runs on 31 hits, the Heidelberg University Baseball team extended its winning streak to six with a sweep of Capital University on Sunday. The Student Princes opened OAC action with a 14-2 victory in the opener and followed it up with a 13-9 win in the nightcap.

Heidelberg (14-4, 2-0 OAC) has won 17 straight over Capital, a stretch that dates back to 2016. The Student Princes have scored 10+ runs in 12 of the last 13 against the Comets (6-12, 0-2).

Just about everyone had a great day at the plate for the Tricolor, with nine batters having at least two hits and two RBIs on the afternoon. McVicker had a team-high six hits and Kyle Mottice led with four RBIs. Aidan Corrigan drew four of HU's 16 walks on the day.

GAME ONE:  BERG 14-17-2   CAP 2-8-0

After conceding an unearned run in the bottom of the first, Heidelberg got to work in the top of the second. Adam McVicker and Thomas Sauer began the frame with singles. Andrew Cook lined a single to left that tied the game. With two outs, Braedy Limke gave HU the lead with a two-run single to right. Aidan Corrigan closed the four-run inning with an infield single that allowed Reece McNeely to score.

HU added three in the third -- scoring one on an Andrew Pokley single and two on a base-hit by Kyle Mottice. 'Berg starter Jackson Powers got back-to-back called strikeouts with bases loaded to work out of a jam in the bottom of the third, preserving the 7-1 advantage.

Unsatisfied, Heidelberg pushed three more runs across in the fourth. Sauer drove in Corrigan with an RBI single to left, then Pokley added two with a single to left center that scored McVicker and Sauer.

Up 10-2 in the seventh, Heidelberg plated two more runs. Corrigan and Cam Farley started the inning with walks. The pair scored on a single by Sauer.

In the eighth, Limke and Corrigan walked. Farley followed with a double to left center -- the first extra-base hit for Heidelberg after 15 singles to start the game. Limke scored on Farley's hit and Corrigan trotted home on an RBI groundout off the bat of McVicker.

Powers (3-0) limited the Comets to two unearned runs in five innings of work. He fanned five and gave up five hits. Nicholas Lavelle was sharp in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. He struck out four batters. Ben Bliss worked a scoreless ninth.

GAME TWO:  BERG 13-14-3   CAP 9-14-2

The 30-minute break between games did little to slow down the BIg Orange Machine, as the Student Princes batted around in the top of the first. Limke led off with a single and moved to second when Farley drew a one-out walk. McVicker bounced a single through the right side, plating Limke. Walks to Cook and Pokley loaded the bases, and a passed ball brought in McVicker. McNeely delivered a two0out single to left that drove in both Andrews.

Farley drove in Limke with a single in the second, inflating the 'Berg lead to 6-0. The Comets strung together four base hits in the bottom of the second, scoring twice.

Looking to regain the momentum, HU put another five-spot on the board in the third. Cook walked, Pokley singled and McNeely walked, loading the bases for Mottice. The senior shot a single to center, driving in two. Limke, Corrigan and McVicker all drove in one run with singles as Heidelberg built their lead out to 11-2.

Cook doubled in a run in the fifth and Corrigan singled in a run in the sixth as Heidelberg kept the pressure on.

The Comets put five on the board in the eighth and two in the ninth to make it a 13-9 final.

Starter Corbin Caplan (3-2) held the Comets to two runs on seven hits over six full innings.
